Kindergarten and First Grade: Introduction to Health / General Health
Our kindergarteners and first graders will be guided through an introduction to, and close examination of, the following critical areas of health education:
● Mental and emotional health ● Family and social health ● Growth and development ● Nutrition ● Personal health and physical activity ● Alcohol, tobacco and other drugs ● Communicable and chronic diseases ● Consumer and community health ● Environmental health ● Injury prevention and safety
Subjects are addressed in a sequential and practical manner, and content preparation is predicated upon the major risk behaviors as identified by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Third Grade: Nutrition
Our third graders will study the basics of nutrition, including nutrients and nutritional needs, and their role in the maintenance of health. It is also a practical applications class that will enable the student to evaluate current trends and analyze their own nutritional habits. The students will explore the following major units:
Fifth grade will be introduced to the topic of social justice this year. Students will start by examining various social movements and agents of change, as well as various issues of social injustice that affect us everyday, including media (mis)representation, stereotyping, and discrimination.
Additionally, students will develop a campaign to raise awareness for a social justice issue of their choosing, and our class will culminate with a field study of the Holocaust at the Museum of Tolerance. Specific topics include:
● Emphasis on vocabulary - social justice, stereotype, discrimination, bias, racism ● Defenders of justice - Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglass, Ida B. Wells, etc. ● Reading advertisements with a social justice lens ● Environmental justice, education equality, gender roles
Second Grade: Peacemaking Skills
Our second graders concentrate on peacemaking skills and conflict resolution. Utilizing a variety of interdisciplinary activities, the lessons are designed to empower children with the ability to solve their conflicts in an effective, efficient, and peaceful manner. The course specifically examines the following four areas of content:
● Peaceful environment and cooperation ● Uniqueness and similarities ● Feelings ● Solving problems and being responsible
Fourth Grade: Exercise Science
As we dive into the field of Exercise Science, students will learn the major bones and muscles that facilitate the movement of the human body. We will closely examine what happens to our body during different types of exercise. We will study the following topics:
● The skeletal system ● The muscular system ● Cardiovascular Fitness ● Body Composition ● Flexibility ● Muscular Strength ● Muscular Endurance ● Speed ● Agility ● Balance ● Coordination ● Reaction Time ● Power
Sixth Grade: Human Growth and Development
The Sixth Grade Health curriculum examines the diversity of physical, emotional, cognitive, and social changes that accompany adolescence. Utilizing such disciplines as anatomy, biology, physiology, and psychology, this multi-week course presents age-appropriate, medically-accurate lessons designed to teach students how to navigate the often turbulent years of puberty and unravel the nuances associated with proper care of their developing bodies. Creating an open and honest environment in which students feel comfortable asking probing questions and discussing sensitive topics ensures the promotion of healthy development throughout adolescence and into early adulthood.
